1. What is the income tax declaration?

The income tax declaration is a tax procedure through which individuals report their income, profits, and losses obtained over a fiscal year to the Tax Agency. Through this process, the amount to be paid as Personal Income Tax (IRPF) is determined.

IRPF is a mandatory tax that all individuals with tax residency in Spain must pay. This includes those who have remained in the country for at least 183 days during the calendar year or whose main economic activities or interests are located within Spanish territory.

This tax is levied on income obtained during the calendar year (12 months). In the case of companies, its equivalent is Corporate Income Tax.


The income tax declaration is annual, and it’s filed once the corresponding fiscal year has ended. The Tax Agency sets a period between April and June of the year following the fiscal year.

For example, the 2024 income tax return is filed between April and June 2025, according to the official tax calendar. It’s crucial to be aware of the established dates to avoid penalties for late filing.
